In anticipation of increased activity on the moon, an international cooperative was established in October 2007 for the purpose of building a lunar spaceport—a site for coordinating landings and takeoffs from the surface of the moon.
Based in Atlanta, Georgia, DarkSide Logistics has been formed out of this cooperative with the task of organizing the first in a series of lunar missions needed to undertake the spaceport development. In this initial mission, a rover will be landed on the moon's surface to capture high-resolution imagery and other survey data. The collected data will be transmitted to Earth, where engineers will analyze the results to determine a suitable location for construction.
The objectives of this mission have been found to coincide with the requirements for the Google Lunar X-Prize. DarkSide Logistics has registered as a contender for this award and has ensured that efforts toward this mission are in compliance with the competition guidelines.
