TE1 Mode of a Planar Waveguide |
In a planar waveguide, the modes of propagation are simply the superposition of two uniform plane waves. The time-varying field patterns that they produce can be quite complicated, however. Below is an animation of the first Transverse Electric (TE1) mode in the waveguide. |

Notes: |
- The dark arrows are E-fields and the faint arrows are H-fields. Note that the E-fields are always perpendicular to the direction of propagation in the waveguide (towards the right) -- hence the name transverse electric.
- The waveguide is built from two infinite parallel plates: one at the top and one at the bottom. Notice that the E-field is zero-valued on both top and bottom surfaces -- just as our boundary conditions dictate for a perfect electric conductor.
