TM1 Mode of a Planar Waveguide
For this TM1 waveguide mode, it is the magnetic field that is always transverse to the direction of propagation.
Notes:
  • The velocity of propagation in the waveguide for the TM1 mode is identical to the TE1 mode.
  • The tangential electric field is zero on the top and bottom plates.  The normal component of the field is non-zero, which is not a violation of our boundary conditions.  On a perfect electric conductor, charges will flow along the surfaces to cancel the electric flux into the conductor.
  • In the middle of the waveguide, the E-field is perfectly aligned with the direction of propagation.  Elsewhere, it swirls around in a circle.
