ECE 6390 Satellite Communications and Navigation Systems, FALL 2010

Budget

This project will most likely be the equivalent of multiple NASA Flagship missions and will require the aid of other nations in terms of costs and resources. NASA Flagship missions are decided upon roughly every 10 years, and range between $2 billion and $3 billion. This project alone will require multiple launches with subsystems that could be classified as a Flagship mission by themselves (i.e., the He-3 extractor and the inertial confinement fusion drive propulsion system). The mission spans at least 30 years before its final journey to Epsilon Eridani (see timeline), so conceivably, the mission could be selected for three Flagship sponsorships as well as a number of the lower cost Discovery or New Frontiers mission classifications for select subsystems.
