Line with a Complex Mismatch at the Load

If there is some reactance at the load, the reflection coefficient can become complex.  This example has a load that is partially inductive (50 + j50W) and results in G = 0.2 + 0.4j.

Voltages for a Complex Load

Notes:
  • If the transmission line is lossless (Z0 is real) then a complex load will always result in some sort of mismatch.  Only a clever alteration to the transmission line (such as a stub-line fanout) will keep the source voltage from seeing reflections.
