The Van Allen Company - Space Hardening

There are two key elements to space hardening: temperature control and physical protection. Both are centered on maintaining the reliability of the spacecraft electronics.

All electronics will be placed in temperature controlled enclosures. The temperature control system will use the excess heat generated by the solar collector to warm the enclosure. Thermal blankets will be used for insulation and thermal shields will be used to protect the electronics from the sun’s radiation.

All electronics will be built from space-qualified components. Antennas will be protected in radomes. Firmware and software will follow space hardening best practices, such as triple redundancy, watchdog timer and ECC in memory. Each system assembled will go through space-qualification testing before launch.
