Resiliency - Seismometer (page 2 of 3)
Placement:
In general, seismometers should be placed in situ with the ground in
order to
obtain accurate readings with a minimal amount of noise. To achieve
this, we
propose the use of a large auger drill - similar to the one shown below
- to
drive the sensor into the rocky soil of Venus. In this scenario a drill
is
stored in a small compartment on the bottom of our landing probe. The
seismometer is mounted inside the hollow shaft of the auger bit. By
doing this,
we can allow effectively place the sensor into a fixed position in the
ground.
The rigid connection between the drill bit and the sensor will allow
for
complete transduction of seismic activity to the seismometer for
reading.
