PS satellites are important components of the MPS system. The major parts of the communication system such as the satellite-to-Earth and satellite-to-Mars communication network will operate on each of the satellites. Therefore, they must be reliable and robust to provide quality service to system users. MPS satellites have different requirements from GPS satellites that orbit around the Earth due to different operating conditions. For instance, the major concern is that MPS satellites orbit around Mars which is almost 2 times farther to the sun than the Earth. This results in substaintially less solar energy available to MPS satellites as compared to GPS satellites. The design of MPS satellites take this fact into account so that the final MPS satellite will be design to operate around Mars effectively.
