he location system is the real operation part of the Martian Positioning System. It provides locationing service to the user on Mars surface. The positioning infrastructure will mitigate the difficulty in location finding for both robotic and manned missions on Mars. The MPS project's aim is to create this positioning infrastructure to support the future missions.

The location system is mainly designed based on the Global Positioning Systems (GPS) which provides positioning service to users on Earth. Although the basic principles are the same, MPS is substaintially differ from GPS due to many factors such as atmospheric composition and accuracy requirements.
