Uplink

Now that the more challenging part of this two way link has been established, the uplink is designed reusing many of the same configuration choices as indicated above. The main difference here is with the lower center frequency.

  • Center Frequency: 32GHz
  • Bandwidth: 100MHz
  • Satellite Antenna: 4m (diameter), 80% (aperture efficiency)
  • Transmit Power: 500kW (57dBW)
  • Rain Attenuation: 3dB adjustment (99.9% of the time.)
  • Design Margin: 2dB

The resulting C/N for this link is 32dB, which is far more than is necessary for conducting
communications.

Error Correction Code

The error correcting code is one of the most important part for deep space communications. We have to use Forward Error Correcting code because we cannot expected to ask a retransmission if a packet cannot be read at the receiver.

We will use Reed Solomon Codes and Turbo codes for protecting data during the transmission We will use the standard (255,223) Reed Solomon encoder to protect bits and then use a interleaver in order to spread burst errors. A turbo encoder will finally be used because this code allows to approache the Shannon limit.
