Verge's Communications

While designing this system, there are many communication links to consider. Each wireless link adds complexity as it brings more frequencies and subsequently, more components. EOSystems engineers have worked to develop low cost solutions for each subsystem while maintaining optimum performance.

The communication system on Verge can be separated into two subsystems: Video Stream and Telemetry, Tracking and Control (TT&C). Each of these subsystems can be further separated into individual links, such as uplink, downlink, and the rover-lander link. These individual links must be analyzed to assure engineers that the communication will not fail. In spite of careful design, a link may fail for a variety of unforeseeable circumstances. To prevent a single link failure from ruining the entire mission, our engineers have carefully developed redundancy within the system to add backup options. These links are further explained for each subsystem by following the respective link on the left of this page.

The remaining topic, Turbo Code, describes the type of coding used on the HD video stream in order for EOSystems engineers to recover the digital signal once received on Earth. This code enhances our main objective by lowering the power required by our link and allowing us to further reduce the cost of components.
